The defending champion will have first gate pick for tomorrow’s All Stars class, after a remarkable last lap run at the Berry Sweet Pole Shuffle.
Beaton improved his best time by 1.5 seconds on his final lap, propelling him from P4 to P1 with a 2:00.270 lap time in variable conditions.
“I just put the blind fold on for a lap and went for it,” Beaton said in front of a jubilant Monster Energy CDR Yamaha pit crew.
“It’s hard to just keep a clean lap and get into it.
“We will be going at it for sure (tomorrow) I reckon.”
The lap marked the first time Beaton had placed first across the two qualifying sessions of the event, yet again edging out ProMX1 Championship rival Kyle Webster.
Webster had topped the first session of the Pole Shuffle and was leading the second session up until Beaton’s last lap.
“To win would be great, but more so to just put on some good racing and put on a good show for everyone here,” the Honda Racing Australia rider said after the first session.
Western Australia Yamaha Team manager Peter Strickland said today’s Pole Shuffle win gives Beaton a psychological edge going into tomorrow’s Manjimup 15,000.
“To have that position and steal it away at the last lap, just tells the rest of the field that, ok for eight laps I wasn’t on, but for one lap I am and I can come get you whenever I want,” Strickland said.
“If the Manjimup track tomorrow is like it normally is, having that first gate pick is really essential.”
