Round 1 of the Brookton Pony Express, brought to you by KTM Australia, was red-flagged at the midway point of the Seniors Enduro after an on-track incident required medical attention for one of the riders.
“Safety is always our top priority,” said Dirt High Promotions owner Willie Thomson.
“Our medical team responded immediately and made the right call to ensure the rider received the care he needed.
“We don’t take any chances when it comes to rider wellbeing.”
The rider, West Coast Honda’s Ben Culley, has since been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home.
The number 505 rider provided an update on social media confirming he is on the mend.
“Now hopefully a speedy recovery,” Lally wrote.
The race was brought to a close at half-distance, locking in official results under Pony Express regulations.
In the Expert Division, The Underclass’ Charlie Creech, alongside a young Riley Moritz, charged to victory from P2 on the grid.
The pairing overcame a blistering pole shuffle lap from Blake Klansjeck and Scott Hewitt, as they set a qualifying time 24.3 seconds faster than the next best team, but were overtaken by Creech/Moritz on lap one and couldn’t reclaim the lead.
West Coast Honda’s Jamie Makin had a resurgent performance in the Ironman Class on his return to the Pony Express series, winning his respective class by over three minutes in a statement before he heads of east to take on the notorious Hattah Desert Race.
Meanwhile in the Women’s Class, the young pairing of Chelsea Blakers with Mia Kennedy dominated the weekend, winning by over a lap to the nearest competitor.
A similar feat was achieved in the juniors category as Bunbury KTM’s Oskar Thomas had a perfect weekend, dominating every session, taking the fast lap in the pole shuffle and then leading every lap to win the Junior Pony Express in Pingelly.
Mr Thomson said he can’t wait to kick things off again with a round of clean uninterrupted racing in Aldersyde.
“We’ve had a high-energy start to the season, and Aldersyde is always a favourite with our riders,” he said.
“We’re heading into river country, get ready for some mud!”
Round 2 of the Brookton Pony Express, brought to you by GASGAS Australia, is set to take place August 1 – 3, with action kicking off Friday night with Flat-Track Motocross.
